We all have heard a couple of stories on how someone got fired for facebook posts which are related to their job or company. Due to increasing use of social media, today’s professionals often post ridiculously stupid things on facebook and other social media sites. They fail to consider that such post can cost them their job.
Regardless of if one post a comment during work hours or off-hours, any negative comment related to their job or company or current boss can lead to unemployment. Many people post their drunken photos after calling it a sick leave and even referencing the fact that they were supposed to be at work. Stupid. Isn’t it?
Here are some things you need to keep in mind so that you are not fired for facebook posts on your account.
1. First of all, do not set your posts to ‘public’, as it is visible to each and every human with a facebook account, including your boss, and your colleagues. It is not that once you set your posts to private, you are all safe. You are not. You can also get fired for your private posts, but the probability gets lower. 2. Avoid posting photos that are evidence of shenanigans at your workplace within work hours. You can get an opportunity to bond with your colleagues through shenanigans at the workplace but don’t discuss anything about it on any social media platform, as it can get you fired. 3. Do not post anything related to your boss or colleagues or workplace unless it is clearly positive. Any sarcastic, offensive or negative may get you fired for bullying or harassment or for just being a gossip. There have been plenty of cases to fire staff because of ‘bullying’ posts in Australia. 4. Many people have been fired for sharing hilarious stories about their customers on social media. Do not try to be funny when it is related to your job or your customers. Posting funny photos of customers and mentioning funny incidents would not be a smart move if you really want to keep that job. 5. Do not check-in during your work hours. It would be stupid if you are supposed to be at work and you check-in from movies and restaurants from your facebook account. No doubt social media is a place to broadcast detailed information of what you did throughout your day, but there might be people like your boss who might not like that piece of information. 6. Do not post any comment that can make you look like a racist or homophobic. Such posts will surely get you fired no matter if you post it during off-hours from your personal computer and is not shared publicly. No company will tolerate such kind of behaviour which can also harm company’s reputation. 7. Do not stick to facebook even in your work hours. You can get fired if your boss sees your facebook screen every time he walks past your desk. Unless, it is part of your job and you are paid to work on facebook.
Consider these points so that you can save yourself from being fired for facebook posts. Think twice before posting anything related to work and watch your posts during your work hours. You can surely use this wide platform for your social life but make sure it doesn’t hurt your job in any manner.
