Do you love your work more than anything else? Do you spend most of your day at the office? If yes, chances are, you have most of the traits of a workaholic.
Stop Being A Workaholic
To confirm if you are one, you can refer to personality traits of a workaholic. Okay. So, you are a workaholic? Well, here are the ways in which you can stop being a workaholic and get back the work-life balance that was missing since long.
- Reevaluate your values, so that work is no more the most important thing of your life.
- Consider the deadline and do not rush into finishing a project even when it is not urgent. If the task is worth investing the time, you can go ahead and do it. But if not, no need to do it right away, it can wait.
- Before you say yes to another assignment, have a look at what’s already on your plate. If you have too many things to do, learn to say no.
- Stop working after your work hours. Suppose your typical working hours are from 9 to 5, then stop working at 5, or 6 max.
- Leave work at work. Don’t bring your pending assignments at home, sticking to your work even during off hours instead of spending some quality time with your family will only damage your work-life balance.
- Stop checking emails during off hours. Period.
- Spare some time for yourself and do whatever you think is fun. Take some time to get away from work and relax.
- Nothing in this world is perfect, so there is no need to spend hours in making something perfect, it never would be. Strive for excellence, not perfection.
- Meditate.
- If money is the concern that is forcing you to have traits of a workaholic, you should know that we earn money to be happy, so sacrificing your happiness to earn some bucks doesn’t make any sense.
- The most important of all, don’t be proud of being a workaholic, most people are. You need to stop being a workaholic, it is not something to be proud of.
Being a workaholic can not only cause work-life imbalance, it can also be a reason for job burnout. Instead of considering it as a medal, consider it as something that would someday force you to say “I Quit!”
