Leadership Training Programs? Tick ‘Indefinitely’ On The Check Box

Why are leadership training programs the need of the hour for transitioning managers? If you were looking for a sign that leadership training and development opportunities are highly beneficial for your organization, you have impinged at the right juncture. As per a report by a leadership platform, BetterManager, and research firm The Fossicker Group, businesses that invest in leadership training and development for their employees achieve a remarkable return on investment (ROI) of $7 for every $1 spent on the leadership development programs.

This impressive ROI can be attributed to increased revenue and sales resulting from participation in leadership development, as well as cost savings stemming from improved employee retention and reduced recruiting expenses.

Leadership Training Programs Impact The Organization

As the President and COO of BetterManager, John Topping emphasized that leadership development brings wide-ranging benefits that positively impact the entire organization. He said that multiple qualitative studies had reflected that the leadership development programs’ advantages have a ripple effect throughout the entire organization.

“As the demand for programs implemented by leaders grows, they are increasingly required to make a compelling business case. This tangible ROI speaks in actual dollars and cents, underscoring that leadership development serves as a profit multiplier.”

A survey of 752 individuals steering leadership development across various companies in the US, Canada, and the UK revealed that despite challenging market conditions, 84 percent of these companies still prioritize investment in leadership development. Moreover, a stunning 99 percent of respondents expressed their intention to either maintain or increase spending on leadership development in the coming year.

Leadership Development Opportunities Are Not Equal Across Industries

The report highlights disparities in leadership development training investment across different industries, including variations in the amount allocated and the recipients of training and coaching. 

For instance, as the survey suggests, government agencies allocated a modest $25 per person, while law firms invested a substantial $2,667 per person. Similarly, holding companies and manufacturing companies devoted $1,667 and $1,000 per person, respectively, to leadership training programs.

The allocation of funds for new and mid-level managers also varied significantly. Business services companies allocated approximately one-third of their leadership development budget to these managers, whereas government agencies dedicated nearly half of their training budget to lower-level managers. Healthcare and insurance companies allocated 41 percent of their budget, and media and internet companies allocated about 39 percent to lower-level managers.

Topping emphasized the importance of providing support and expertise through leadership development opportunities at all managerial levels, emphasizing that it should not be limited to those occupying corner offices.

Leadership Training Programs Have More Challenges To Solve

The report also underscored the challenges faced by leaders in adapting to evolving workplace trends. Deloitte‘s recent report highlights the increasing emphasis on training to enhance project management, communication, and soft skills such as decision-making and critical thinking.

Furthermore, managers, particularly those transitioning from technical roles or other positions without prior leadership experience, are in need of better training. Effective manager training should be trainee-centric, focusing on essential skills and promoting practical application as soon as possible.

Leadership training programs play a vital role in helping managers acquire the skills needed to meet new demands, especially in light of cultural changes that have emerged since the pandemic. It not only enhances employee well-being but also supports women leaders and promotes inclusive leadership.
