Dear Jane
I handed in my notice at work, and the boss threw a bit of a tantrum, cutting my notice period short by a week. When I tried to sort it out with HR, they terminated me without giving a reason and aren’t paying out my notice. Now I’ve got a two-week gap between jobs. Can I still claim unemployment benefits?
Thanks,
Job Juggler
Dear Job Juggler, I’m incredibly sorry to hear about the tumultuous situation you’ve encountered at work. Resigning from your job, only to be met with a shortened notice period and sudden termination without reason, must be incredibly frustrating and stressful.
Given the peculiar circumstances of your resignation and subsequent termination, it’s definitely worth pursuing your eligibility for unemployment benefits. The two-week gap between jobs will be a difficult period financially, and any additional support could be invaluable.
Chin up! You’ve got this.
Yours in career calamities,
Jane
