As a part of a larger overhaul of operations, General Motors is laying off hundreds of its salaried employees, primarily in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan. The GM layoffs contribute to the growing unemployment numbers among IT workers, with organizations increasingly viewing job cuts as a primary means to “better position the company for the future.” Analysts suggest that the white-collar layoffs at GM and other organizations could open up opportunities for businesses to double down on hiring more candidates with the AI skills that are in demand in 2026, however, the switch from layoff to large-scale hiring has been slow to come.
General Motors has not announced a hiring freeze and appears to have open IT roles across its operations, but the scale of hiring doesn’t entirely offset that of the cuts. As the GM IT workers who are to be laid off strive to find their own footing in the job market, many questions remain about the future of employment and how workers can prepare for the changes prophesied by employers.

GM Layoffs to Affect 500 to 600 Employees as the Automaker Resets Its White Collar Workforce
General Motors’ IT layoffs were first reported and confirmed by Bloomberg News, but limited details have been shared with regard to the nature and scale of the layoffs. From what we know, the GM layoffs will affect about 500 to 600 employees across its information technology operations, and will be centered in the U.S. CNBC suggested that employees in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, will primarily bear the brunt of the cuts, which indicates more localized terminations rather than a global reduction in headcount.
Such announcements always result in public concerns about employers offshoring jobs, but GM has not indicated any plans to increase hiring at other locations outside the U.S. Considering that GM is among the top H-1B employers in Michigan, it is possible that many of the roles cut could affect workers on H-1B visas.
The company was reported as having a global headcount of 68,000 salaried workers last year, with 47,000 of these positions centered in the U.S., but the current cuts could disrupt the balance. GM is no stranger to white-collar layoffs, having eliminated about 200 CAD engineers in October and watched the subsequent exit of many key leaders by December. Headcount reductions in 2024 similarly hit white-collar workers to a considerable degree, making these layoffs a now-familiar part of the company’s strategy.
Why Is GM Exploring an IT Overhaul?
GM’s IT job cuts are not a sign of a decline in IT considerations or a declining need for talent in the realm, but a matter of repositioning the business for its future ambitions. While this would typically look like additional investment in upskilling and more targeted talent acquisitions, the work trends today showcase a more ruthless approach to operations that results in the downsizing of existing headcount.
“GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition,” a spokesperson for GM told CNBC in an emailed statement. As is the problem with most business decisions being made today, we understand the changes being introduced across operations, but not how they help the business prepare for the future of work.
All signs point to a desire to invest more heavily in autonomous, AI technology, although such terms were not spelled out in GM’s layoff announcement. What is evident is that GM has recently brought out many leaders with expertise in the AI space, and it is likely that future talent investments will also lean in favor of IT workers with AI expertise. Behrad Toghi, for example, joined GM as the AI and Robotics Lead last year, and has reportedly built the “AI Robotics Engineering team and the Mountain View robotics lab at GM from the ground up.” Rashed Haq also joined GM last year as its Vice President of Autonomous Vehicles, showcasing the future ambitions of the automaker.
Will the Hiring of IT Talent Keep Pace with the Many Firings?
The current era of daily reports of layoffs isn’t great for employee morale, but the cuts keep coming nonetheless. While jobs in IT were once seen as secure, the GM layoffs join a long list of announcements that suggest this is no longer the case. While there is work to be found, many workers are finding themselves stuck in an overcrowded job market or have been forced to take on roles that they are overqualified and underpaid for.
These trends aren’t ideal and deserve closer reflection from business leaders who might soon find themselves bringing on talent that is unsatisfied with the work on offer. This may not result in immediate job hopping, but an unmotivated workforce does a business no favor.
For workers, upskilling and reskilling are essential processes that cannot be ignored. Employers are rewriting their expectations for new hires, and AI literacy is now a must, even in roles that do not directly involve building AI systems and operations. Google’s hiring process now opens the doors for candidates to showcase their AI-centered capabilities during interviews, which is a reminder that these are not nice-to-have but need-to-have skills to seek employment.
For employers, internal development of talent could be a more lucrative investment rather than rampant firings. As workers remain on the edge regarding the possibility of layoffs, building up the skills required internally not only capitalizes on their existing expertise in organizational operations, but also ensures that their updated skills meet the overall needs of the business.
