Nespresso is facing a lawsuit alleging discrimination in the workplace, with a former employee accusing the organization of mistreating her over her African American identity. The Belzone v. Nespresso USA lawsuit was filed in Illinois, and it claims violation of her rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects individuals from discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics such as gender, race, color, religion, etc. The lawsuit also accuses Nespresso of ADA violations and a refusal to accommodate the employee’s impaired eyesight.
Nespresso attempted to have the lawsuit dismissed over the plaintiff failing to sufficiently identify and disclose the disability. Although two of the claims made have now been dismissed, the courts ruled that there was sufficient cause to allow the case to proceed to the next stage of discovery and enquiry. The eventual unfolding of the Nespresso discrimination lawsuit may tell us more about the court’s treatment of the allegations made and how businesses can best navigate their relationship with employees, but as things stand, the lawsuit serves as a reminder that cases of racial discrimination are no trifling matter, and could draw extensive investigations into how the business operates.

What We Know About the Nespresso Lawsuit: 10 Years of Employment Bring Elaborate Allegations of Discrimination
Allegations of discrimination within a workplace can leave a lasting impact on the workforce, and things are no different with the Nespresso lawsuit. The plaintiff, an African American, filed a lawsuit against Nespresso, where she had worked for 10 years as a Boutique Coffee Specialist, prior to resigning in 2023. The claims of racial discrimination and harassment made in the lawsuit primarily stem from the organization’s failure to promote the plaintiff on three separate occasions, choosing to hire less qualified and less experienced White employees instead.
The defendant has also been accused of conducting a “sham” interview with the plaintiff for a senior manager position that they had already filled. The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff was already performing the job that came with higher roles, without the title and benefits that should have accompanied the tasks. The defendants reportedly left a senior role unfilled for nine months while requiring the plaintiff to manage its operation. This is not an uncommon practice in 2026, but it can have demotivating effects on the employee when their workload continues to expand without compensation for the additional service.
The lawsuit also cites examples where the plaintiff was denied a promotion despite years of experience, while other employees were promoted within just two years. The plaintiff stated that while she was seen as not “good enough” for the promotions, she was regularly expected to lead the organization’s diversity efforts. In this as well, she was allegedly denied the right to attend a celebratory summit, but later asked to feature in a marketing campaign. Upon her return, she was expected to use her PTO leave for this company-sponsored event, and did not receive compensation while the non-Black employees did.
Allegations of Bias in Feedback Also Feature in the Lawsuit
The original court documents state that when the plaintiff was transferred to a new location, an Assistant Management role was filled by a White employee at the previous location, despite the organization previously stating that there was no need for such a role due to the volume and location of the store.
The discrimination allegedly extended beyond the promotions to the hiring process as well, in which she claims she was held to different standards. While the selected candidate was treated to a lighthearted conversation, the plaintiff was “criticized for arbitrary, non-performance related criteria during her interview.” The Nespresso discrimination lawsuit also argues that many of the criticisms made against the employee stemmed from negative stereotypes associated with Black employees.
The ADA Violation Claims Are Another Point of Consideration
Another reason for filing the lawsuit stemmed from the plaintiff’s accusation of Nespresso’s failure to meet ADA standards. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to explore reasonable accommodations for employees with medical conditions that may make them eligible for additional assistance on the job. The plaintiff’s disability came to light approximately five years ago, severely impairing her eyesight.
She was required to take a leave of absence when her PTO was exhausted, and eventually had to resign from the job. The lawsuit states that the defendant’s lack of support caused the plaintiff significant stress, exacerbating her condition and causing symptom flare-ups. Part of Nespresso’s appeal to have the case dismissed centered on the employee’s failure to sufficiently identify and disclose the condition, while framing this leave of absence as a reasonable accommodation for her situation.
The court proceedings should soon reveal if the plaintiff’s allegation of racial discrimination at Nespresso will hold up through additional explorations as more details come to light. While the court has stated that the “allegations are quite thin,” future proceedings could reveal additional details.
As Nespresso Battles with Allegations of Title VII Violations, Employers Should Investigate Their Own Internal Procedures
The racial discrimination allegations and the accompanying lawsuit against Nespresso are now for the courts to explore in greater detail, and could frame the fate of future cases filed on similar claims. What we can take away from the case for now is the importance of fair access to opportunity, management training, and the importance of documentation. All employees deserve a fair chance at advancing in their careers, and organizations must establish a clear standard to evaluate employees by.
If employees are found to be performing below expectations, then highlighting areas of growth and improvement are essential next steps in the evaluation process. This ensures that employees are aware of why they may have been skipped over for a promotion and what they need to do to secure it the next time a position opens up. The lack of communication from employers, paired with arbitrary criticisms of their appearance or work, is seldom sufficient reasoning to justify the lack of career progression for a long-term employee.
Training for managers handling such responsibilities is equally important as the documentation procedure. Comments made by employees in the workplace often reflect the ideology of the employers, especially when there are limited avenues for employees to bring additional attention to the matter. For workplaces to operate without a hitch, transparency and empathy remain non-negotiable considerations, regardless of how smoothly things appear to be running without them.
